Weekend Insanity

I almost forgot what a hard weekend of work felt like. I mean, god, what happened to the days of taking sledgehammers to plaster and lath on a regular basis? Ripping up slats of hardwood flooring--one by one- or taking a crowbar to cancer-causing asbestos ceiling tiles (and then burning them... sorry, future mutant children.)

In preparation for a party that was going to be for Jed's birthday (and still is an attempt to be, but alas, is three weeks late,) we are trying to spruce up the place and get some of the outstanding projects done. Namely, trying to put up a privacy screen between our patio and the neighbor's and installing an island/peninsula in the kitchen.

Now, projects like these are pretty much old hat-- So when we were like 'hey- let's install a 16-foot cedar privacy screen and design/build a custom peninsula'-- we were thinking- eh, maybe two full days of work, tops. We had the material list already planned out, knew what questions to ask (we learned from the multiple trips to Ikea last time-- ask for the drawer dampers, make sure to get the drawer fronts, etc) so we were fully prepared. And luckily, I'm amazed to tell you, we came up on very few glitches! I was petrified to hit some utility line hidden coyly three feet under the lawn or discover that after we've cemented in the posts that the panels don't fit, and we'd have to create some sort of extend-a-fence.)

Yet, none of this happened (short of our kitchen walls not being straight :duh: and the countertop not fitting in perfectly flush.) But really, I'm taking my first breath and starting to wind down here at 9:40 on Sunday, and I hope I can compress two days' worth of relaxation into twenty minutes...

Fence panels up tomorrow, finishing touches on the peninsula, and we're ready to partay...
