Steps in the Right Direction

So we visited the adorable and charming Heritage Prairie Farm on Saturday morning. It was just as beautiful as the website... and the gorgeous 70-degree morning with clear skies and sun definitely helped. The little shop was so nice- had an assortment of homegoods, organic and locally made products, and a few coolers of local meat (Maple Park) and fresh milk. We bought some organic lamb bratwurst (that was for Jed... I don't do lamb) and some fresh skim milk from Osceola, WI (where Melissa lives!) It's bottled fresh at the farm and is grass fed with no wacky growth hormones. I had some in a smoothie today, and I don't know... I think it was a bit yummier! We also bought some fresh eggs and made omelets with them on Sunday morning. All in all... fresher and more 'eggy' tasting... it's hard to describe.

So we're (me more than Jed... but he's in...)trying to make this conscious effort to eat more 'real' food. No processed crap, no fake food. I am reading this book "In Defense of Food" right now that is just fascinating.... it's a quick and interesting read...

From the website http://www.michaelpollan.com/: Because most of what we're consuming today is not food, and how we're consuming it -- in the car, in front of the TV, and increasingly alone -- is not really eating. Instead of food, we're consuming "edible foodlike substances" -- no longer the products of nature but of food science. Many of them come packaged with health claims that should be our first clue they are anything but healthy. In the so-called Western diet, food has been replaced by nutrients, and common sense by confusion. The result is what Michael Pollan calls the American paradox: The more we worry about nutrition, the less healthy we seem to become.
